A Tale of Two Noble Souls

चित्र
From the Director’s desk…. Dear Reader, By an uncanny coincidence two of India’s stalwarts were born on this day, the 2ndOct, though 35 years apart. The older one was anointed the Mahatma, or Bapu, Father of the Indian nation while the younger, LalBahadur, inscribed in the nation’s memory for his unforgettable inspirational slogan, “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” rose from a simple lower middle class Kayasthhousehold of UP to be India’s 2nd Prime Minister (and the 6thHome Minister), succeeding the venerable Jawaharlal Nehru. Though born ‘Srivastava’ he shedthe family name early in life to own the honorific ‘Shastri’ (or Pundit) to his name, having mastered Sanskritlanguage and literature at the KashiVidypith, Benaras. MohanchandKaramchand Gandhi, born to a KathiawariBania family, appeared on the Indian political scene as a Satyagrahi from South Africain 1915 after his 21-year sojourn and fresh from his laurels of having protected the Asian community from the ravages of the British masters w...

Requiem to a passing year

From the Director’s Desk… Requiem to a passing year As I sign off the year to wish a new, and perhaps difficult, year in battling yet one more variant of Coronavirus, I must signal two important events pertaining to education and knowledge dissemination, both happening in the last quarter of the year. One was the opening of the Sarojini Devi Memoriallibraryin mid-September, a paean sung to an inimitable person whose persona had charmed me all my life though by a happy coincidence she brought me in humanform into this world, my mother; the other, a much awaited platinum jubilee celebration of my beloved school, BiswambharBidhyapith, which happened with much fanfare in the third week of December in Puri. It could be anybody’s guess that I may have been the common factor in both, and the spirit which emboldened me in both enterprises was the passion to pay back to societyselflessly what little I had earned and made it my calling. But before going any further, let me wish you andyour ...

About Sarojini Devi From the the Director Desk ||

चित्र
On Mother’s trail The Sarojini Devi Memorial Library is over 10 days old to this day. Raised to the memory of my mother, a remarkable woman of grit and determination and one of the ablest educationists that I know of, she had been instrumental in embedding in me right from an early age, the virtues and strength of education. I had risen to the occasion, lived up to her expectations and finally found a career of my choice in the Foreign Service. That gave me an incredible exposure to around 75 countries, big and small that I visited, partly for professional reasons but mostly due to my wanderlust, of getting to know peoples, their cultures, languages, ways of life and philosophies, comparing them along the way with the immense diversities that are the toast of our land. Thus the idea of this library was born. To pay back to the society what I had accumulated over the years, an eclectic collection of books on a diverse array of subjects that I had bought from my personal savings, fr...

Sarojini Devi Memorial library opening ceremony

A “public library with private initiative”, the Sarojini Devi Memorial Library is the brainchild of Amb. Dr Malay Mishra who, on his return to Puri after retirement from the Indian Foreign Service, thought of creating a library in his home, ‘Madhusmruti’, with his personal collection of books gathered from all over the world. The bulk of the 3000-plus books are in English while there are books in Odia (the native language of Odisha state to which Amb Mishra belongs), Hindi and a few other foreign languages. Sarojini Devi Memorial library The library is created as a memorial to his mother, Smt. Sarojini Devi, an eminent educationist who dedicated her entire career to promotion of teaching and education, and is meant to encourage book reading and gaining proficiency in English language and literature, and various disciplines of social and physical sciences, amassing knowledge from a diverse range of subjects, especially among the younger generation. There is a special section on ch...
