Sarojini Devi Memorial library opening ceremony

A “public library with private initiative”, the Sarojini Devi Memorial Library is the brainchild of Amb. Dr Malay Mishra who, on his return to Puri after retirement from the Indian Foreign Service, thought of creating a library in his home, ‘Madhusmruti’, with his personal collection of books gathered from all over the world. The bulk of the 3000-plus books are in English while there are books in Odia (the native language of Odisha state to which Amb Mishra belongs), Hindi and a few other foreign languages.

The library is created as a memorial to his mother, Smt. Sarojini Devi, an eminent educationist who dedicated her entire career to promotion of teaching and education, and is meant to encourage book reading and gaining proficiency in English language and literature, and various disciplines of social and physical sciences, amassing knowledge from a diverse range of subjects, especially among the younger generation. There is a special section on children’s books for children who may like to visit the library with their peers and elders, and a special corner for senior citizens. Books are meant to be read in the library premises only and not to be issued out.

The library, housed on the 2nd floor of the building, is intended to grow into amultipurpose centre with occasional lectures, book readings, mentoring sessions and other academic activities intended to disseminate knowledge for the benefit of all. The library is open from 1pm to 8 pm on all days except Mondays and select national and state holidays.
